You've Got to Fight for your Right to Synthesize!
Essay
due: Monday, April 24
Write a paper that synthesizes classroom sources and your
own knowledge, experiences, and research to answer the question “What do
Americans think is worth fighting for?” Remember that a synthesis paragraph
begins with your own opinion/topic sentence, which is supported by quotations
from two different sources. Not all of your body paragraphs need to be
synthesis paragraphs. Four to seven pages. MLA format.
Minimums:
1) Two synthesis
paragraphs.
2) Six sources. You may consider:
-
“Remarks by the President at the Acceptance of
the Nobel Peace Prize,” by Barack Obama
-
Songs presented by your classmates
-
Johnny Got
His Gun, by Dalton Trumbo
-
Historical conflicts, large and small
-
Contemporary conflicts, such as wars in Africa
and the Middle East
-
Contemporary and classical literature
-
Modern films
-
Popular songs
-
Personal experience
-
Something interesting that I haven’t thought of
yet
3) An element of visual rhetoric (this counts as one of your
six sources). This could be an editorial cartoon, an image, or a graph or
chart. Your image should be included in the body of the paper. You should
explain how this image helps you explore what Americans feel is worth fighting for. Be
sure to cite the source of your image. Beware that using a large image to pad
your page length does not actually add much content.
4) Be sure your internet sources are reliable and college
level. Beware of over-reliance on The
Huffington Post and similar sources. Be sure to review how to establish
your sources.
5) Evidence against your thesis, soundly refuted by your laser
sharp logic.
6) A properly formatted Works Cited page.

How to Submit to Lit Mag
Due by the beginning of class on Tuesday, March 21.
1. Share your google doc with the Lit Mag and with me. Please use a gmail account that you check.
2. In the e-mail that accompanies your attachment, include your name and your Advisory teacher. You should also include a brief summary of your piece and an explanation of why your piece is a good fit for the Lit Mag.
3. Proofread. And proofread. Then, proofread again. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation are particularly important in a cover letter.
4. When you have submitted your essay, return the hard copy to me. I will enter your score when I receive your hard copy.
Here's an example of a cover letter:
Dear Editors,
My name is Ed Kline, and my Advisory teacher is Mr. Kline. I have shared my essay, "Why Do We Have To Do This?" for your consideration. This essay is a thoughtful exploration of the ridiculous things teachers ask us to do and a righteous challenge to their arbitrary authority. The students of OCHS will appreciate this essay for its candor and its accurate depiction of our daily miseries.
Please let me know if you have any difficulties opening the doc.
Thank you for your time and consideration,
Ed Kline

War Song Presentation
War Song Speech
1.
Your song must be accessible. Most songs are on Spotify; if you tell me
your song and artist 48 hours in advance, I'll be able to confirm its
existence and create a playlist; otherwise, you'll need to bring the
song on a device that will plug into my speakers.
2. You need hard copies of the lyrics. If you give them to me 48 hours in advance, I can print up a class set.
3. Your lyrics need to include a citation in MLA format at the bottom of your document.
4. Introduce your song by telling us the title, artist, year of release, and paraphrase the general story of the song.
5. Play a minute or so of the song so we get the flavor.
6. Tell us about three rhetorical devices your songwriter employs and why he or she uses them.
7. Tell us how this song might help us argue what Americans feel is worth fighting for.
8.
This is a "talk" rather than a formal speech. You may stand or sit on
the stool. You may use your lyric sheet or index cards as notes. Please
rehearse your presentation.
9.
If you are ill on the day of your presentation, you will need to
arrange with one of your classmates to present in your place.
Dates: Presentations will begin on March 16.
NOTE: If
you and someone else present the same song, that is fine. However, you
cannot use the same rhetorical devices. Advantage goes to the first one
to present! Post your name, your song, and your period in the comments below to claim it.
