Song Presentations

Pick a song that will help you and your classmates argue that there is or is not such a thing as a just war. Bring a hard copy of the lyrics to the song to me the day before your presentation is due. Your hard copy should include the title, the artists, the lyrics, and a bibliographical entry. You DO NOT need to add your song to your Bibliography.

Your presentation should include the following information in this order:
  • Establish the source of your song: artist, year released, a bit about the context in which it was written
  • A paraphrase of the story of the song. What is the song about?
  • An analysis of a rhetorical device or two that helps the artist make an argument about war
  • An explanation of how your classmates might use your song in an essay
  • Anything else.
We'll listen to a minute or two of your song before you speak.

JGHG Discussion Questions

  1. What are Trumbo’s major and minor purposes in writing Johnny Got His Gun?
  2. Define Trumbo’s style. What rhetorical strategies does he depend on consistently? How do those rhetorical strategies help him create his stream of consciousness?
  3. Dalton Trumbo chooses to use punctuation inconsistently throughout the novel. Pick a moment when his use of unconventional (or conventional) punctuation is particularly conspicuous. What is the effect of his punctuation and how does this effect fit into one of Trumbo’s larger purposes? [Note: you will notice that areas that are least conventionally punctuated are richest in rhetorical devices.]
  4. Select a moment where stream of consciousness has a particularly powerful effect. How does this effect fit into one of Trumbo’s larger purposes? It might be useful to identify moments where Joe is particularly lucid to contrast with moments of stream of consciousness.
  5. Compare Trumbo’s arguments against war in Chapter 10 to his arguments in Chapter 19. How are they similar? How are they different? Why does he need both? Be prepared to refute his arguments.
  6. Identify significant allusions from a variety of places in the novel. What is the effect of these allusions and how do they help Trumbo achieve his purposes?
  7. Make a list of Joe’s major memories over the course of the novel. What does this list reveal about Trumbo’s values? How does Trumbo use these values to support one or more of his larger purposes?
  8. Examine Trumbo’s description of Joe’s doctors. What is Trumbo’s attitude towards Joe’s doctors? How does that argument fit into his major and minor purposes?
  9. Consider the structure of the novel. Think about how chapters begin and end, how Trumbo transitions from one chapter to the next, and how the novel is divided into parts. Why did he structure the novel the way he did?
  10. What is the most interesting element of the novel that we haven’t discussed as a whole class?

Cause and Effect Brainstorm Topics

Brainstorm on at least three of the following prompts. Be sure you have a good idea for an outline before you stop brainstorming.

1. Write about a personal experience that had a profound effect on you. Begin with a brief narration of the event and explore that variety of effects. Possible topics include (but are not limited to): trying to learn something difficult (you may or may not have been successful), a profound school experience (positive or negative), a time you got in trouble with a friend.
  • Step 1: Brainstorm potential experiences
  • Step 2: Brainstorm effects
  • Step 3: Write a "So What?"
2. Think about something you do regularly (for example, reading for pleasure, a hobby, athletics, or texting friends). Brainstorm what causes you to participate in that activity. Brainstorm the effects the activity has on you. If you take this brainstorm to outline, focus on either the cause or the effects.
  • Step 1: Brainstorm activities you do regularly.
  • Step 2: Brainstorm causes
  • Step 3: Brainstorm effects
  • Step 4: Write a "So What?"
3. Think about a time when you have been stereotyped. What caused you to be stereotyped? What were the effects on you?
  • Step 1: Brainstorm times when you've been stereotyped
  • Step 2: Brainstorm causes
  • Step 3: Brainstorm effects
  • Step 4: Write a "So What?"
4. Think about times when you have felt threatened or when you have (intentionally or unintentionally) intimidated someone else. What caused the fear? What were the effects on you or on others?
  • Step 1: Brainstorm times when you've felt threatened
  • Step 2: Brainstorm causes
  • Step 3: Brainstorm effects
  • Step 4: Write a "So What?"
 5. Think about an invention or an item of technology and consider its effects on the world. Consider both the positive effects and negative effects.
  • Step 1: Brainstorm a list of inventions/technology
  • Step 2: Brainstorm causes
  • Step 3: Brainstorm effects
  • Step 4: Write a "So What?"
