Some Helpful Advice From Mr. Kline

While I was reading revisions over the weekend, I found that organization is a recurring problem in papers. These problems fall into three categories:
Global organization
     - Do the paragraphs in your essay come in the best, clearest order?
     - Do paragraphs break in the right places?
Internal organization
     - Do the sentences in your paragraph come in the best, clearest order?
     - Do all of the sentences belong in the same paragraph?
Transitions
     - Do your topic sentences remind the reader where he's been and tell him where he's  going?
     - Do you use transitional phrases of addition or contrast in your paragraphs?

Peer Review Guidelines

-->
Write all over your partner's paper. Be sure to attend to the good, but if you only offer praise you've done little to help your partner.

As you read your partner’s paper, take care to:

·      read for the good. Note good word choices, strong arguments, interesting examples, effective syntax.

·      confirm the existence of two synthesis paragraphs.

·      confirm all authors and sources are adequately established.

·      confirm all quotations are properly set-up.

·      evaluate the organization of the paper (strong opening? satisfying closing? does each idea lead to the next?)

·      make certain the author address the “Yeah, but …”? and to eliminate the passive voice.

When both partners are done, discuss the essays quietly if you have time.

If you really like writing synthesis essays

Here is the link for a national scholarship essay contest. The task is to write a 1,500 word synthesis paper that addresses the prompt you'll find in the link. Statewide winners earn $1,000 (I can't imagine too many students enter); national winners earn $10,000.

If you're interested, I'm happy to help you revise. You need to let me know, because I need to register as a coordinator before students can submit work.

Check out the link, and come chat with me if you want to move forward.
