Post questions you have about the Justice Essay here ...

... instead of e-mailing them to me. That way, others can see your question and my response, and they might also add their own thoughts. Be sure to include your name in your post. (I love cut and paste!)

  1. Is there a specific length you want us to shoot for on our essay?

  2. In the past, when I've asked for a word count, it's been between 750-1000 words. That word count is a good target, but it's not required element for this assignment.

  3. So is this supposed to be like a speech-typed writing or a definitions/opinion essay?

  4. I'm not quite sure what you mean by a "speech-typed writing," but this is definitely a definition/opinion essay. The only opinions you shouldn't try to argue for are "Everybody has their own definition of justice" and "There is no definition of justice."

  5. Do you want the title to be "what is justice?", or would you like us to come up with our own?

  6. Oh, thank you for asking that question! You have just saved many of your classmates an embarrassing experience. Ordinarily, on the first day of class, I read the title of the 15 or so essays called "What is Justice?" Then, I read one or two of the interesting titles and ask which essay they'd rather read. I've never had a student opt for "What is Justice?" over an essay with an interesting title.

  7. Should this essay be more informative, or a personal expirence/story?

    1. Good question. This is definitely an expository prompt, so you don't want to submit a short story as a response. However, personal experiences and anecdotes can be effective evidence in the larger context of the essay.

  8. Is it okay to talk about two different, but commonly referred to, types of justice and then to side with one and explain why?

  9. Oh, also, does it need to be in five paragraph form, or can I write as an extended paragraph?

  10. It is completely okay to talk about two different types of justice (in fact, you can address more than two, if you like). Five paragraphs - intro, three bodies, and a conclusion - is a good minimum.
